About
Râpa Neagră (monument of nature) is a protected area of national interest corresponding to category III (geological nature reserve), located in Caraș-Severin county, on the administrative territory of Mehadia commune.
The natural reserve located in the Banatului Hills, in the northwestern part of Mehadia village, has an area of 5 ha, and represents an area made up of Tortonian conglomerates, made up of sedimentary rocks (a sandstone layer, followed by another marly-sandy one, with deposits carbon dioxide); which over time, due to natural phenomena (thawing-freezing, wind, washing, seepage) was revealed by the soft surface layer; resulting in a naturally exposed area, where layers of hard, black-gray colored rock are visible.
