A Golden Kingdom – The legends of the Dacian treasures from Caraș-Severin

Legend of the Dacian gold

In ancient times, according to legends handed down from ancestors to ancestors, the Dacian people who once used to roam the territories of the Banat, possessed fortunes of eternal value. But these fortunes were not mere coins of exchange. There were no jewels, gems, or silks of rare delicacy. Their wealth was represented by gold.

In Caraș-Severin, the legends are as bright as the beauty of the natural landscapes that can be found at every step and the spirit of the locals is by its nature thirsty for the smallest bit of adventure. Researchers in the area support the existence of a multitude of routes, which, in theory, would open the real gate to the universe of hidden treasures. These would be based on testimonies of elders from past eras but also on myths dating from the 17th or 18th centuries.

According to the locals, where gold or silver objects are hidden, the water that passes over them is much cleaner. Caraș-Severin is known worldwide for the purity of its water but also for its healing properties. This caused a lot of controversy because not even one of those famous treasures was discovered where the water would be clearer.

On the other hand, it is said that the gold is cursed and whoever comes close to discovering it, is cursed to never find it.

The association of treasure hunters and treasures from Romania, based in Reșita, managed to donate only 140 Dacian and Romanian coins discovered in the county to the museums of Caraș. An feeble number if you take into account the value and volume of the alleged Dacian treasures waiting to be discovered.

The treasure of Poiana Mărului

One of the most famous treasures hidden in the heart of the Caraș-Severin mountains is the treasure of the Dacian king Scorilo, hidden in Poiana Mărului, in Zăvoi commune. The gold is said to be hidden, according to local people, somewhere in the center of Scorilo's rock. There you can find the cave that would be the eternal resting place of this long-lost treasure.

To have a chance to discover it, one must go to that place on the day of the summer solstice at the spot marked on sunrise. The cave is at a distance of 40 meters from the foothills, and the first ray of sunlight that falls on the ridge of Buza Nedeii, in the middle of the rock wall, would indicate exactly where the gold is hidden.

Vestiges discovered at the Herculaneum Baths

Starting from the 18th century, after being hidden for more than 1000 years in the forests and mountains crossed by the waters of the Cerna, the ruins of the Roman thermal resort "Ad Aquas Herculi Sacras" were revealed to the general public. Then, the locals discovered ruins of ancient temples and baths but also of an amphitheater and numerous monuments and statues dedicated to the gods Hercules, Aesculapius and Hygea.

Also during that period, numerous inscriptions and coins of inestimable value, real as well as historical, were discovered. Most of the vestiges were sent to the Imperial Court of Vienna so as not to be lost in the mists of time.

The myths related to the Dacian gold have always been closely related to the caves in Caraș-Severin. Even today, it is said that the treasures would be hidden in the heart of the rocky tunnels, somewhere in the place where the soul of the mountain molds into shape.

Ancient mysteries have fascinated entire generations of Romanians, but the Dacian gold has remained one of the most famous mystical stories.
