The road of the Almăj Country

Almăj Country is a special land where you can see unique places of inestimable value. Some were torn from the soul of nature and others were born from the skill of the local craftsmen. Archaeological discoveries and the existence of archaic names are eternal proof of the fact that the Almăj Valley has been inhabited since ancient times.

Not far from the Dalboșeț commune, a very large "villa rustica" was identified, which is proof of the Roman influence in this area. In the village of Putna but also in Rudăria there are old water mills, the oldest being built since the 18th century. Also in Putna, there are still proud houses built over two centuries ago.

The country of Almăj is the place where many valuable vestiges have come to light. Located in the southern part of the depression, traces of modern man have been discovered in the town of Bănia since prehistoric times, and on a nearby hill you can see the shadow of a medieval castle. Although many historical vestiges can still be seen in the place where they were discovered, other objects are certainly now in a village museum.

The path of the vestiges

Out of the desire to preserve the values discovered on the land of Almăj, the locals did everything to collect them and put them in storage.

The house of former teacher Gheorghe Rancu from Șopotu Vechi has been transformed into a veritable museum. Over two thousand exhibits can be seen: Roman coins, mine flowers, ceramics and tools from the prehistoric era, but also popular costumes, uniforms, old photos and books, icons on glass. All the exhibits were collected over decades, all coming from the Almăj Valley.

Many other houses still keep old pieces of clothing. In the villages of Almăj Valley there are still locals who follow the old traditions and practice the trades necessary for daily living, practiced since the time of the Austrian rule.
